One of the best re-issues from last year of the rare occult American black metal entity known only as Von, with both the original and highly sought after Satanic Blood Demo on the first disc, and a full live ritual on the second disc. The out of press 2003 edition is now back for a second serving, from none other than Nuclear War Now and it’s a must for those fans of underground, lo-fi black metal. With ridiculous pre-song introduction and spoken word segments about goats and satan, Von’s satanic sound is quite distinctive when compared to the early 90’s Norwegian material doing the rounds at the same time of the demo’s release in 1992, and it’s one of the only examples of an American black metal influencing countless numbers of second wave Scandinavian bands, even to the point where Varg wore a Von t-shirt during his trial. My favourite aspect of Von however, has to be the vocals and the production on the vocals – with such a heavy use of delay on the grunts, it just adds an almost tacky richness to the songs as they echo in and out, very cool and very kvlt! Try getting the vinyl edition of this if you can, I haven’t picked it up yet but the one I’ve seen looks fabulous.
