Joey Terrifying - demo
by Kingmob
Ska-core seems about as popular as a cup of cold sick these days. Those who remember some of the atrocities carried out under that banner during the third wave years are no doubt very happy about that. None the less, it takes stanes to do what you want in the face of mass distane, so hats off to Joey Terrifying for even trying.
Of the three tracks featured on their demo, its opener National Insecurity that delivers the most. Certainly more punk than ska, its a ripping tune that calls to mind Scottish Ska-punks of the past Ex-Cathedra at their Bucky fuelled best.
The second track, for me anyway, is much less successful. It reminds me too much of one of NOFX's less illustrious ska numbers. It also over exposes what I'd point to as the only major fault on the technical side, which is the horrible twangy, bass-less bass sound. Something I'd certainly hope to see rectified on future outings.
Third track "Troubled Times" is much better but the bass lets it down again. I dare say for an album a bit more work would be put into the recording so this is certainly a promising start. Its also always good to see variety at play in the underground DIY scene, so again, hats of to Joey Terrifying for trying something even though its not particularly "in" at the moment.
