Capital Punishment. What's all that about then?
Capital Punishment was the name we came up with in a hurry when we needed one for a local Edinburgh music message board to replace the old one which was about to expire. Maybe it's not very good. It wasn't my idea, so I don't care. One name is much the same as another, it's hardly any worse than 'Edinburgh Metal Scene'...
Edinburgh Metal Scene?
If you like, that was our immediate precursor. At least in so far as several of the regular posters on that, are now regular poster on this. EMS was past its best. The scene it represented had died a death, people had moved on, and what had evolved in its place was a different beast. When the old owner of the site decided to call time, some of the more active posters decided to step up and fill the void that would be left without a local music forum.
Isn't this just a rip-off of a previous site?
Do you think Edinburgh Metal Scene was the first local music forum ever? No one had thought of that one before had they... In fairness, if we are talking inspiration, the general set-up of this site owes more of a debt to Collective Zine, but as Joe worked on both that's fair play in our book.
So this is all about metal then?
Well no, that's one of the reasons we wanted this site to differ. All the users have WIDE musical tastes. We don't feel there is any dominant musical style in Edinburgh, but there are lots of small, diverse and interesting sub-scenes, organising interesting events, many of which blur the boundaries between genres. Punk, Metal, Post Rock, Noise, Anti-Folk, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Garage... all mixing together and crossing over. We like that eclecticism, and with your help we'd like to cover it all. In our existing group of core contributors there is a loud guitar music bias. If you're knowledgeable on more obscure avenues why not write some reviews for us?
